Synopsis :

A film unit goes for a shoot deep into a forest.
They settle at a place with bare minimal facilities run by a strange and quirky man called Setu.
The hero of the film Sharman is a completely self obsessed man with no other concern except for his muscles and the leading lady. The leading lady Aasha bears with him because of his star status. Director JJ thinks of himself as India’s answer to Steven Spielberg and Producer Moorty thinks the director is screwing up the film and stopping him from becoming the next Yash Chopra. Laxman is a completely subservient spot boy but with a hidden monstrous ego. Cinematographer Shakky is very philosophical in nature and Action Director Rakka is a frustrated man who hates the leading actor, Sharman. Script Supervisor Sameera is a simpleton with ideals and a secret crush on the protagonist Sujal who is an Assistant Director, who in turn has a huge crush on Aasha.
It all begins when the camera conks off… They have two days waiting for the replacement to arrive and with no form of entertainment or communication when Setu suggests a camping trip into the forest, they jump at the opportunity. As Setu drives them through the jungle around undergrowth in a relic Jonga, they begin to wonder how Setu can remember the way back as the jungle looks the same all around.
As they settle near a pond for the night and sit around a bonfire Setu hears a strange sound. He goes to investigate and never returns. After a desperate search they discover his dead body.
Panic sets in among the unit members and they jump into the Jonga but them being unfamiliar with the terrain and their hastiness result in an accident. The axle breaks.
Now completely lost and trapped in the jungle as Setu, the only guy who knows the way out is dead, they don’t know which way to move to get out of the forest… yet another unit member gets brutally killed thereby, making them realize that whatever it is that has killed Setu is out to get them all.
From then on it is a desperate struggle to survive against that unknown entity. And as their numbers dwindle the suppressed passions among them come forth, they realize that it is not only their lives they are fighting for, but also for their loves…

Such typical films like Karan Arjun would more than likely call for something more of regular hit music rather than path breaking music (one shouldn’t expect masaladar films to have exquisite music). Rajesh Roshan was fully aware of this when he composed one his better soundtracks for his brother’s films. A few of the songs are very melodious and call for repeating on instance. The others may be as well composed but are not meant for the repeat button. Either way, Rajesh Roshan was successful in this album proving his versatility as a composer in comparison to some composers who use the same inspiration in composing their tunes.

“Jaati Hoon Mein”, the Shah Rukh Khan - Kajol tune had the very popular Kumar Sanu-Alka Yagnik duo singing to a somewhat western tune which served the film picturization well. The catchiest portion of the tune is more the renditions of the chorus as the verses do drag at portions. Rajesh Roshan’s opening had the right ingredients to become a hit and the swift paced drum backdrop accompanied by the guitar serves the song well. Overall, the song was a great start to the soundtrack.

The theme song, “Yeh Bandhan To”, which appears twice, also succeeded pleasing a listener. Carrying a traditional feel to it with the flute and a tune that matched most of the eighties styled tune, Alka, Udit and Sanu singing greatly. The song is also emotional, and Indeevar’s lyrics are also well written. This is definitely one of the nicer familial bonding songs of yesteryears.

But one shouldn’t wonder why Lata Mangeshkar has one of the best, if not the best, songs on the soundtrack. The ‘woo my lover track’, “Ek Munda”, uses a wide variety of instruments to provide the song with great music. Ranging from the dholak, flute, Roshan does a great job in composing a sweet love song here and of course Lata Mangeshkar is sweet and arguably the best part of the excellent song.

“Bhangda Pale” and “Jai Ma Kaali” are more situational tracks. There are rare chances that they may provide you with endless listening sweets but serve their purpose in the film. The songs can be catchy and do have their singers (Sadhna Sargam, Mohammed Aziz and Sudesh Bhosle) singing well. The songs are peppy, upbeat but are familiar to other tunes of the same genre. Jai Ma Kaali is a more upbeat and fast take off of other religious tunes. Nevertheless Kumar Sanu and Alka do try to lift the song above the regular fare.

Finally for the frontbenchers, there is the all masses non-classes cabaret number, “Gup Chup Gup Chup”. Of course, the song is peppy and works in favor of the soundtrack in that it will succeed on all accounts on drawing attention to the soundtrack. Who doesn’t like a sensuous song to set the feet tapping occasionally? And who better to set their feet tapping to it than Mamta Kulkharini? Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun also show the magic of their vocals combined. They do compliment each other with contrast. Indeevar’s lyrics are however, typical dance stuff.

Karan Arjun has the accurate amount of appeal to click with a regular listener. A few of the songs are well worth the purchase, while the others, well composed, serve as film fillers. The over all appeal is good enough though not exactly something one would call a hundred percent great soundtrack. Listen to Lata Mangeshkar in Ek Munda. That is a true sugary sweet tune.

Deepika Padukone is a star in just three movies and she is raring to go higher than that. She is on cloud nine yet she has her feet placed firmly on the ground. She hasn’t lost it at the top.

“Both me and my sister have been taught to be self dependent. I am 23 and very proud of it. I’m young and raring to go.

Age has nothing to do with maturity. I started traveling alone at a very young age (12) as a badminton player. That made feel responsible from a very young age. I learnt to travel in a team share dormitories and bathrooms.

You could say I’ve roughed it out. My parents made sure my sister and I were brought up with normal working class values.”

She says she is not a party animal.

“I’ve never been the partying type. I’m not much into celebrations ever since I moved to Mumbai to become an actress. I don’t have any friends to call over.

Karan: How does it feel…you know you are back after such a long time…do you feel things have changed in the industry…the work ethics…things like that?

Madhuri: Yes…simple things

Karan: And that didn’t happen during your time?

Madhuri: Oh no, it didn’t…sometimes we used to go on the sets, we didn’t even know what we were going to say in the scene…we used to get the dialogues right then…

Karan: Last minute

Madhuri: Ya…last minute…learn them and just say them and the whole economics was different at that time of film making…and I think because of the corporate kind of culture that has come in now, it’s great, because everything is so organised now

Karan: Everything is streamlined…

Madhuri: Everything is disciplined …you know it is worked out before hand…what the scene is going to be and what you are going to wear…what you’re look is going to be…everything is set for you …it is so easy for the actors.

Karan: What else has happened is, this whole emergence of the paparazzi and the media… don’t you think?

Madhuri: That has shocked me

Karan: Like what

Madhuri: I was invited for this opening and I saw this barrage of cameramen and the press was like falling all over each other…and I was like what is happening �

Karan: And that wasn’t the case earlier

Madhuri: No, it wasn’t… I mean there were a few photographers…same familiar faces who used to be there everywhere to cover� but now it’s like you know new people, new faces and I went to this Siddhivinayak temple…

Karan: Oh ya� they have the tendency to follow people at that particular temple

Madhuri: Ya, you know…I came out and it was like� oh my God, and I thought my kids are going to be scared and I was holding on to them� but you should have seen my little one…

Karan: What did he do?

Madhuri: He was fluttering his eyes and smiling and my other kid was also enjoying all that attention�

Salman Khan’s Veer is in trouble yet again. An FIR has been lodged against the crew in Bikaner for cutting down tress, transporting and utilising them for shooting the film. It has been alleged that the film crew did so without appropriate permissions from the concerned authorities. What’s more, these trees belong to the Khejri species which is the state tree of Rajasthan.

The Bishnoi tribe which worships this particular species of tree is furious with the film crew. In an FIR lodged in Gajner Police Station in Bikaner, some people of this tribe have requested strict action against the members of the unit who ordered the cutting down of tress.

The chief conservator officer of Bikaner, S.S. Choudhary told NDTV, “The Bishnoi community wants action to be taken against some of the members of the film unit because they have indulged in illegal action of transporting Khejri tress for shooting purpose. Once they came to know that Khejri trees were cut down and transported for various purposes for the film, they rushed to the police station and lodged an FIR. They want immediate action against the film crew. Fortunately for the film crew, it’s a compoundable offence. So they will have to pay some penalty if charges are proven against them.”

The Gajner Police station in Bikaner confirmed the FIR and said, “Yes, there is an FIR lodged under section 41 and 42 of the Rajasthan Forest Act under which transporting Khejri tree is an offence.”

On the other hand Vijay Galani, producer of the film, denied having any such information. He said, “At the moment I am near Jodhpur and I am shooting for my film Veer. In my knowledge, neither have we cut down any tress illegally nor is there any FIR lodged anywhere in the state. People are saying all these things without any basis. Till now, we haven’t received any communication from any police station about the FIR or any complain against the film crew.”

Galani might not have been informed about the FIR till now but it s not the first time that Veer has got into trouble. Just a few days ago, it was mired in controversy when the Rajasthan High Court stayed the shooting in Amber Fort because of an accident which injured around 15 people. Later, the court allowed the shooting on the condition that the producer will pay a compensation of Rs 20 lakhs to the state government for the damage to the historic structure and.compensation to the onlookers injured.

“Namaste London” and Indian culture

I found an interesting movie review of “Namaste London” not for its dealing with the movie, per se, but especially for its dealings with the issue of identity. The author of the post (rightly, in my view) points out the error in the need to justify identity by demonising the other. Here are some excerpts:
I am not a movie buff, nor do I indulge in writing movie reviews. In fact, this is the first time, I am pushed to do it.

The movie is Namastey London. I had the opportunity to watch it almost five times, but I could not complete it even once. But this time I did use the opportunity. Apart from beautiful London and Katrina Kaif, movie offers nothing interesting. But what really disturbed me was the subject of the movie. The director of the movie did try to touch an important subject of our desi bretheren brought up abroad. I thought the director's portrayal of the desis living abroad and the westerners itself was very much biased. I am not sure if he studied the subject well before coming to his conclusions.

It is yet another movie that tries to picture Indian culture as the all good-good and the most 'sanskari' culture in the world. Ironically, it is so fragile that it has fallen prey to the demon of western culture. And Akshay Kumar arrives as the savior of this pitiable, dying culture. He proves that ours is a superior culture. The worst part is that to prove his thesis he has to take support of the "immoral and consumerist" West. He has to prove that the West, its culture and its people are inferior to us. I wonder if we need to demonise other to prove our worth.

I am an Indian. I love my country, I love my culture. I have confidence in the strength of my culture; and do not feel the need to demonise the West to show me the worth of it. [Namaste London] is yet another movie that tries to picture Indian culture as the all good-good and the most ’sanskari’ culture in the world. Bobby Deol and Rani Mukherjee in Badal There is no need to book in advance, if you intend to go to theatres to watch Badal. On the first day itself, one found only a handful of people waiting at the movie hall and the current booking window open. Perhaps, this is a sign of things to come. The initials weren't promising and after seeing the film, you realise why!

The film starts with the riots of 1984, when Delhi and Punjab were in turmoil. Badal's (Bobby Deol) family is massacred and he vows revenge. The killing is carried out by a corrupt police officer named Jai Singh Rana (Ashutosh Rana) who has this sadistic gleam in his eyes every time he murders someone.

Badal is brought up by a terrorist and himself, turns into one. The rest of the movie proceeds predictably and requires the patience of a saint to sit through. The film has been directed by Raj Kanwar who is known to make films filled with generous helpings of drama and violence.

This film too, has an overdose of violence. You have this officer who wants to kill people, needlessly. You wonder why!

Bobby looks traumatised throughout the film. After all, he is supposed to be a terrorist, and that couldn't have been too comfortable for him. The film portrays the terrorist in a positive light, trying to explain how and why the process starts. Of course it is fictionalised, as Bobby himself pointed out in his interview to rediff.com.

With this film, the actor seems to be following in the footsteps of the two other famous Deols, Dharmendra and Sunny -- you know the usual tough he-man image and the "tu ne meri maa ko chua? Mein tera khoon pee jaaonga" stuff. And another thing we must point out, the new cropped haircut doesn't suit him at all.

Bobby Deol and Rani Mukherjee in Badal The only person who is a delight to watch is Rani Mukherjee. She is the sole character who provides relief in this otherwise supposedly serious film. She is peppy and endearing, and is shown as a flighty person whose idea of excitement entails seeing an arrested terrorist. Despite this idiosyncrasy, she is good and breathes life even into this inconsequential role.

Why is an actor like Ashutosh Rana wasting himself doing such a role? His character doesn't have any flesh and requires no real talent. Why would anybody require talent to look ruthless? He has this strange habit of burning down whole villages, even if there's just a single terrorist hiding somewhere. Another idiosyncrasy, we must say.

A word of warning before you watch this film -- for the sake of your sanity, leave your brains behind. There are so many things here that don't make sense. But then again, there are a host of other movies that fall into this category anyway.

A point in case is when Rana reaches a small town to make arrests. He walks around nonchalantly, while people are running helter-skelter. Not to mention the bullets that are whizzing past his head. But does any bullet get him? Nope. Rana's safety has to be ensured till the hero can settle his due with him.

Then you have this sugary sweet family, comprising Amrish Puri, Neena Kulkarni and Mayuri Kango, which gives shelter to a stranger without giving so much as a second thought (idiosyncrasy no 3?!!), simply because "he is from our village." After which Badal becomes the son of the house --conveniently.

Then again, when the hero is arrested and taken in an ambulance after he's been shot, he just opens the door, jumps out and escapes. Amazingly enough, there are no police constables guarding this so-called dreaded terrorist.

Bobby Deol and Rani Mukherjee in Badal There is another terrorist as well, in the form of Azgar (Shadaab Khan) who speaks with an Afghan accent. While our anti-hero needed an excuse to be bad, he didn't even need that. He supplies arms and ammunition. Our filmmakers should now stop flogging this particular subject to death.

The songs are passable. Two of them have been picturised on Mink and Suman Ranganathan, who, as usual, strut their stuff. Most of the songs have the feel of Punjabi folk music. Anyway, none of them is anything to write home about. And the same can be said of the film too. It's quite a torturous experience and a waste of three hours.
